What is a traumatic brain injury?

A traumatic brain injury is caused by an external force that damages the brain. Most traumatic brain injuries occur from a jolt or blow to the head. A penetrating traumatic brain injury takes place if an object penetrates the skull and impacts the brain directly. Nonpenetrating injuries are known as closed injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries are classified according to their severity as mild, moderate, or severe.

Is a concussion a brain injury?

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury, and these terms may be used interchangeably. However, categorizing a traumatic brain injury as mild does not mean it is not serious. If a second injury occurs before recovery is complete, the results can be more severe, even deadly. If you or someone you know experienced a head injury, take our concussion quiz.

A single concussion may increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease later in life and can lead to postconcussive syndrome, wherein symptoms linger for a year or more. Multiple concussions can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain condition.

Symptoms of a Traumatic Brain Injury

A mild traumatic brain injury may present the following symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Brief loss of consciousness (does not always occur)
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Mood changes
  • Memory, concentration, attention, or thinking problems
  • Changes in sleep patterns

Moderate and severe traumatic brain injury may present the same symptoms as mild injuries, but they may be more severe or persistent. The following additional symptoms may occur:

  • Persistent nausea and vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Inability to awaken from sleep
  • Dilation of one or both pupils
  • Slurred speech
  • Weakness or numbness
  • Impaired coordination

How is traumatic brain injury diagnosed?

A physician can often diagnose a mild traumatic brain injury by asking questions about symptoms and performing a basic physical examination. Moderate and severe traumatic brain injuries may require additional assessments, including:

  • Neurological examination
  • Imaging tests, such as an MRI or a CT scan
  • Glasgow Coma Scale, which measures a patient’s ability to speak, move, and open the eyes
  • Neuropsychological testing

Are all brain injuries considered traumatic?

By definition, traumatic brain injury occurs as a result of an external force. Brain injuries that occur as a result of internal processes are known as nontraumatic brain injuries. A nontraumatic brain injury may occur as a result of deprivation of oxygen or exposure to toxins.

A brain injury caused by deprivation of oxygen is known as a hypoxic or anoxic brain injury. Hypoxic brain injury occurs when the oxygen level becomes too low, and anoxic brain injury occurs in the complete absence of oxygen. Both types can have serious consequences and may occur as a result of the following:

Electrocution is a common mechanism of construction accidents in Bucks County.

Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 223,135 people in the United States were hospitalized for traumatic brain injury in 2019, and in 2020, 64,362 people died from traumatic brain injury.

These figures do not include untreated traumatic brain injuries or those treated in urgent care clinics and emergency departments.

The most common causes of traumatic brain injury stem from:

Are brain injuries permanent?

According to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, brain tissue generally does not regenerate, but some patients may regain full functions. This can happen through a rewiring process known as neuroplasticity, whereby the brain adapts to the loss of tissue by rerouting information through undamaged channels.

However, doctors are generally unable to predict which patients may regain function or to what extent any patient may recover. Neuroplasticity is generally stronger in younger patients, but younger patients do not always recover. For patients who do regain function, the rewiring process may take years or a lifetime.

According to the CDC’s analysis of people aged 16 and older who received inpatient rehabilitation services for a primary diagnosis of TBI, as listed in the Traumatic Brain Injury Modeling Systems National Database, the five-year outcome of traumatic brain injury was as follows:

  • 22 percent died
  • 30 percent worsened
  • 22 percent stayed the same
  • 26 percent improved

Long-Term Impact of Brain Injuries

According to the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center, people with brain injuries may experience multiple challenges that interfere with daily functioning.

Cognitive Impairments

Cognitive difficulties after a brain injury may interfere with a person’s executive functions and prevent them from living independently. Cognitive difficulties may include:

  • Compromised problem-solving
  • Impaired complex thinking abilities
  • Becoming confused easily
  • Attention and concentration deficits
  • Memory problems
  • Speech and language impairments

Behavior and Mood Problems

Brain injury can impact the neurotransmitters in the brain, especially dopamine, resulting in an increased risk of mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

Neurotransmitters may recover over time. However, even if the brain chemistry recovers, cognitive problems, physical disabilities, and loss of previous lifestyle could also cause or contribute to emotional and behavioral changes. Additional emotional and behavioral changes include:

  • Irritability or aggression
  • Increased dependency on others
  • Mood swings
  • Loss of motivation
  • Lack of awareness of changes

Physical Disabilities

Damage to the parts of the brain that control physical functions may result in the following:

  • Reduced coordination
  • Weakness
  • Impaired balance
  • Numbness, loss of sensation, or paralysis
  • Impaired motor skills
  • Problems with or loss of vision, hearing, taste, or smell

When should I contact a Doylestown attorney?

It is important to contact an attorney as soon as possible after the injury occurs. Although the Pennsylvania statute of limitations for brain injuries is two years in most cases, some exceptions apply, and preparing a case that will result in fair and reasonable compensation requires significant preparation before you can file.
